First a little bit of history, and something about
us...
For centuries, mortice and tenon jointing has been acknowledged
as the most desirable and successful means of joining large sections of timber,
providing both strength and visual appeal. It was the technique employed by
our early pioneers as they strove to establish buildings to house themselves,
their goods and their livestock. Many substantial communal and public buildings
were constructed in the same fashion as settlements grew.
Buildings featuring mortice and tenon jointing still
survive as testimony to the durability of this framing technique, as do
similar of even greater age in other countries, notably Western Europe,
Britain, the United States and Canada.
Gradually, with time and fascination for machine-made
objects, this technique became almost forgotten, unfashionable. However,
in recent times there has been a re-birth of appreciation of time-proven
skills, crafts and trades, and along with this a recognition of the validity
of 'less modern' methods.
In the mid 1980's the practice of mortice and tenon
jointing was revived in Victoria by a small business catering for 'alternative'
owner-builders. Having observed the strong level of interest and growing support
given to this historic building technique, Lyrebird Ridge Cottage Frames was
established in 1996 to offer mortice and tenon framing as an attractive alternative
to mainstream project homes and kit home suppliers, with great potential for
owner-builders seeking an individual approach to their building project.
